India is the number one country in the world to generating spam emails. No, no I am not saying this, as I am from India too, this is based on the recent report from Internet security firm Kaspersky. According to Kasperksy Internet Security, in the third quarter of the year 2011, spam accounted for about 79.8% of email traffic, and the top three countries responsible for generating it were India at 14.8%, Indonesia at 10.6%, and Brazil at 9.7%.
The spam accounts for 79.8% of overall email traffic (almost nothing) and seems to have found a small Indian law haven for their activities, enhanced by the number of computers and Internet in the country, outnumbered only by those of China and the U.S.
As per AFP reports,
India has emerged as the world’s top source of junk mail as spammers make use of lax laws and absent enforcement to turn the country into a centre of unsolicited email. A recent report by Kaspersky Lab, a Moscow-based global Internet security firm, says more spam emails was sent from the south Asian giant than anywhere else in the world in the third quarter of the year.
Vijay Mukhi, an Internet security specialist in India’s financial capital, Mumbai said “Spammers, forced to look for new bases after other countries cracked down on the practice, can act with impunity in India. We have an Information Technology Act that was introduced in 2000. But we don’t have any convictions under it and it’s silent on spam emails, If I’m a spammer and I don’t have Email Spam Filter, I would rather spam from India to India and the rest of world because nothing will happen to me.”
As per the report, all of the countries that make up the top 10 sources of spam emails are situated in South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. This is due to the fact that there are numerous users in these countries and they are, for the most part, not very experienced when it comes to IT security. This makes them a soft target for cyber criminals spreading spam-bots.
And I was thinking from where I get all this spam emails.
