Apple has recently unveiled the latest iPhone 6s at its traditional September event in Cupertino. The phone comes as a successor to the last year’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The latest-gen iPhone 6s is pretty much similar to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in design, but comes with significant upgrades in the hardware department.
The new iPhone 6s offers impressive specifications along with a much durable design made out of aircraft-grade 7000 series aluminum and a much stronger ion-coated glass compared to its predecessors. The iPhone 6s best suits to compare with the iPhone 6, but how well it stands against its predecessor bigger sibling? Well, let’s compare the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 Plus and find it out.
Apple iPhone 6s vs Apple iPhone 6 Plus: battle of the successor and predecessor
Design
At the first glance, the Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 Plus, both smartphones are hard to differentiate as they look alike. They both measure 7.1mm around the waist. However, the iPhone 6s is lighter at 143 grams than the 6 Plus that weighs 172 grams.
They both offer aluminum constructions, but the iPhone 6s is more durable than the latter with the 7000 series aluminium as mentioned above. Overall, they both offer excellent designs, but the latest-gen iPhone 6s is more durable than its predecessor.
Display and OS
The iPhone 6 Plus is a phablet sized offering with a 5.5-inch LED-backlit Retina HD display bearing a pixel density of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The iPhone 6 on the other hand is a compact device with a 4.7-inch LED-backlit screen with IPS technology and Taptic Engine.
The phone’s most significant offer is its Retina HD display with 3D Touch, which is quite similar to Force Touch found on the Apple Watch. The 3D Touch screen is capable of recognising different levels of pressures and perform gestures called Peek and Pop. On the software-front, the iPhone 6s runs the latest iOS 9 version, while the iPhone 6 Plus will get it later this year.
Configuration
The iPhone 6s offers better performance on the paper as it is powered by a 64-bit upgraded A9 processor, which as per the brand offers 70 percent faster CPU and 90 percent faster graphics processing than the A8 SoC available on the iPhone 6 Plus. In addition, the iPhone 6s comes with an embedded M9 motion co-processor, while the iPhone 6 Plus offers an old-gen M8 motion coprocessor.
As far as the storage is concerned, the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s come in 16GB and 64GB internal memory variants. However, the latter gets a higher 128GB inbuilt storage edition as well. Overall, on the configuration side, the iPhone 6s wins over the phablet iPhone 6 Plus.
Camera
The iPhone 6 Plus offers an 8MP iSight rear camera with optical image stabilisation, True Tone LED flash, five-element lens, autofocus, HDR, full HD video recording, and a FaceTime 1.2MP front snapper. The iPhone 6s on the other hand offers much better camera specifications including an upgraded 12MP iSight camera and a 5MP FaceTime shooter.
The iPhone 6s is capable of recording 4K quality videos, and users can also use the phone’s display as a ‘Retina Flash’. In addition, the iPhone 6s comes with multiple new imaging tweaks compared to the features available on the iPhone 6 Plus.
Connectivity and Battery
In terms of connectivity, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 Plus, both offer almost similar specifications including LTE, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, fingerprint sensors, GPS and GLONASS. However, the iPhone 6s offers LTE Advanced and faster Wi-Fi, and a second-generation Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
The iPhone 6s offers 14 hours of talk time and standby time of up to 10 days, while the iPhone 6 Plus is capable of providing 24 hours of talk time and 16 days of battery life.
Conclusion
The Apple iPhone 6 Plus is one of the best selling iPhones till date as claimed by the brand. The phone offers an excellent large display, decent performance and camera features, LTE support, a large battery, and a decent design. The phone is available for around Rs 45,000 on the online stores in India.
However, the Apple iPhone 6s offers a next-gen 3D display, latest Apple processor, much better camera features, latest software, and multiple storage variants. The iPhone 6s is yet to reach the Indian market, but we do know that it will be priced around Rs 50,000 in the country.
I don’t feel there’s any need to have same product made twice, Apple is just making fool of everyone, every second year by adding an S product. S products are just the same product with same design, and a little bit of software/hardware upgradation.
